As we enter April and Child Abuse Prevention Month, new data from Texas Department of Family and Protective Services shows what many don’t want to believe: In Lubbock County, 690 children were confirmed victims of abuse or neglect.
This isn’t happening somewhere else. It’s happening here and most of the abuse is happening inside the home, by someone the child knows and depends on. Child abuse is preventable, but only if we’re willing to face what’s real.
This is hard to watch. But it’s harder to ignore:
As you saw in the video:
154 children were babies under 1 year old
55 children experienced sexual abuse
2 children died (both under age 4)
438 of the child abusers were parents
At Family Guidance and Outreach, we work with families every day who are overwhelmed, isolated, and trying to figure it out without support. Prevention doesn’t start after something goes wrong. It starts with education, connection, and showing up for families before they reach a breaking point.
If you’re a parent, caregiver, or someone who supports families: you matter in this. Because protecting children isn’t someone else’s job.
It’s all of ours.
