Move Together: The Power of Family Exercise

Physical activity isn't just about gym memberships, expensive gear, or marathon training. At its core, exercise is simply any movement that gets your body going and when you do it as a family, it becomes a powerful way to build connection, health, and joy.

What Counts as Exercise?

You don’t need a fancy routine or a pricey setup. Walking around your neighborhood, dancing in the living room, playing tag at the park: these all count. A good pair of sneakers and a willingness to move together is enough to start.

Physical Activity Guidelines for Kids

Here’s what the CDC recommends:

For Kids Ages 3–5:

  • Keep them active throughout the day.

  • Encourage movement during playtime.

  • Join in! Kids love when grownups participate too.

For Kids Ages 6–17:

  • At least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous activity every day

  • Mix in:

    • Aerobic activity (walking, running, biking)

    • Muscle-strengthening (climbing, push-ups)

    • Bone-strengthening (jumping, running)

Why It Matters

We’re living in a time where children are more sedentary than ever. Screens are everywhere: phones, tablets, TV, social media. While some screen time is okay, it’s crucial to balance it with movement.

Regular physical activity helps kids:

  • Sleep better

  • Improve their mood

  • Strengthen their bones and muscles

  • Reduce stress and anxiety

  • Build confidence and resilience

  • Bond with their families through shared fun

So, Where Do You Start?

Right where you are. You don’t need a gym, a big yard, or a strict routine. Just get moving with your kids. Take a walk, play a game, try a dance video. The important thing is that you do it together.
