The school year is over. Backpacks are tossed aside, alarms are turned off, and kids everywhere are ready for summer. For many families, summer brings excitement and freedom. But it can also bring a big adjustment.

Children who have followed routines all year long suddenly have more free time, less structure, and a lot of energy. Parents may find themselves balancing work, childcare, activities, and the pressure to “make summer special.” The good news? Summer doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful. Here are a few simple ways to help your family get summer break off to a strong start:

Keep Some Routine

Kids thrive on predictability, even during summer. You do not need a strict schedule, but keeping a few anchors in place can help everyone adjust:

  • Consistent wake-up and bedtime routines

  • Regular meals and snacks

  • Quiet time or reading time

  • Screen breaks

  • Family connection time

A little structure can go a long way in reducing stress and helping children feel secure.

Don’t Overschedule

It can be tempting to fill every day with camps, activities, and outings. But children also need downtime. Summer is a chance for imagination, boredom, creativity, and rest. Those “nothing to do” moments often become the moments where kids build forts, read books, create games, and learn to entertain themselves.

Create a Summer Bucket List Together

Instead of carrying the pressure alone, invite your children to help. Ask questions like:

  • What do you want to do this summer?

  • What do you want to learn?

  • What places do you want to visit?

Mix big and small ideas:

✔ Library visits

✔ Water balloon fights

✔ Movie nights

✔ Visiting grandparents

✔ Camping in the living room

✔ Reading challenges

✔ Baking together

Children often remember connection more than cost.

Watch the Screen Time Creep

Summer often means more screens. Rather than aiming for perfection, think balance. Try creating “before screens” activities:

  • Outside time

  • Reading

  • Chores

  • Creative play

  • Family activities

Screens are part of life, but connection still matters most.

Focus on Presence Over Perfection

You do not have to create a picture-perfect summer. Children do not need constant entertainment. What they often remember most are the simple moments: Eating popsicles outside.Talking before bed.A walk around the neighborhood.Laughing in the kitchen. Small moments build strong memories.

A Final Thought

Summer can feel long, busy, messy, and wonderful all at the same time. Give yourself permission to slow down. Protect the moments that matter. And remember: you do not have to do everything to create a meaningful summer for your family.

From all of us at Family Guidance & Outreach, we wish your family a safe, connected, and memory-filled summer. ☀️❤️
